Working offline

Prepare a project and keep working without signal.

On Android and iPhone, FieldOps is built to be used without a signal. You do not switch anything on: what you do offline is kept and sent later, automatically.

Before you go

  1. While you are still online, open the project you will work on, and its timeline, forms and documents, so they are on the phone.
  2. On the Satellite map, look over the area you will work in, at the zoom you need, so the imagery is kept.
  3. Open your profile and go to Offline Storage to download content for offline access and see how much space it takes.
Test itBefore a real exercise, switch the phone to aeroplane mode and run through the day's work. A rehearsal that never loses signal has not tested the thing that matters.

What works offline

Works offlineNeeds a connection
Reading projects, timelines, forms and documents already on the phoneVoice and video calls, captions and translation
Posting to the timeline, with photos and voice notesImagery for areas you never opened
Filling in forms, with GPS stamps and mediaSeeing others' changes made since you went offline
Drawing and editing map features; navigationTranscribing voice notes
Writing messages (sent when back in range)

When the signal returns

Everything queued is sent in the order you did it: messages first, then timeline posts, then large media. Uploads that fail are retried; the files stay on the phone until they are safely sent. Sync also runs in the background from time to time, not only while the app is open.

If two people changed the same thing

Most clashes are settled automatically (the latest change wins for messages and posts). For projects and documents you are shown both versions, field by field, and choose: keep mine, keep theirs, or merge.

In a browser

The web app at app.fieldopsinc.com needs a connection. Browsers do not let a web page keep a project's imagery and media the way a phone app can, so use a phone in the field.
